Long Distance Military Relationships Girlfriend/Spouse

A long distance relationship can be trying for anyone, but mix in a military deployment or a spouse joining the military and the relationship just became harder. How do you keep the man of your dreams and still have a healthy relationship when he gets home?

Communication

Experts agree being able to discuss relationship matters regularly, openly and directly is the best chance for a long distance relationship. With most military relationships, time and distance is a determining factor in regular communication. He’s in the military and requirements are tedious. There’s going to be time zone differences and days without telephone or internet use. At home, spouses and girlfriends deal with work schedules and a hectic family life, this can make coordination daunting. Even when the deployment distance separates you, it’s important to communicate the message to him before the frustration leads to battles.

Pick Your Battles

Pick your battles. Although he’s not fortunate enough to pick his, you can pick your battles. This is a hard learned skill that requires patience. Do you want to argue or cause your significant other more stress while they’re abroad? Bring up small pet peeves will use up much needed time and energy for important subjects like kids, finances, future and so on.

Talk About Your Time Together

You have little time together, make the most of it. He wants to remember the great times you spent together and what life will be like when he comes home. Open communication about each other’s needs will be the respect and trust that bonds long distance military relationships for the long run.
